Materials contain an account written by Elizabeth Gleason Mayland in 1999 regarding her service in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II from 1943-1945. Describes her family and childhood, nurses training in Harrisburg, PA, joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and joining the Army Nurse Corps immediately following graduation. Summarizes the letters she wrote to her parents and family about training and assignments, traveling overseas to France, and the importance of receiving letters. Describes her schedule, conditions at the hospital, and her visits to France, Germany, South America and Japan. Contains typed copies of her letters, written from 1945 to 1998. The majority of her letters talk about her son, Laurie, living in Japan in a new home with new food, culture, and experiences. Also contains letters to her sister, Hanni, from her home in Turkey. Also contains photocopied photographs and newspaper articles about her and her family. Also contains family Christmas letters beginning in 1981. Also contains several talks given in church meetings from 1972-1988. Also contains letters written to Mayland from the military and other organizations (1952-1993). Dated 1939-1999.
