Scope and Contents

Materials contain a history of Zelta Walker regarding her service in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from August 1943 to February 1946. History was written for the Nurses at War Project. Walker served as a Registered Nurse and received the rank of 1st Lieutenant. She talks about entering the medical corps, the clothing she was issued, and her responsibilities on the Fairmon Army Air Base in Geneva, Nebraska. Also recalls the death of the dietician, which created challenges and responsibilities for her. Talks about her friendship with fellow nurse, Dove Chandler, and their missionary efforts in establishing an LDS servicemen’s group and sharing the Gospel with others. Also discusses the end of the war and her discharge in 1946. Concludes with her testimonial and love for America. Also contains several photocopied pictures (1943-1945), a letter of thanks from President Truman (1946), greetings from the Latter-Day Saints General Presidency Y.W.M.I.A (1944), a letter from Walker's grandson (2002), Walker's handwritten testimony (2003), and a summary of her life after the war. Dated 1943-1946, 2002-2003.
