Margaret May memoir, 2002 December 19
Scope and Contents
Donated to the Nurses at War Project, contains a memoir of Margaret May, who served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Talks about going to nursing school and all of the work that involved. Talks about joining the Navy and taking care of wounded soldiers from the Pacific. Describes how doctors took care of their burn patients- by placing maggots on the wounds for several days to eat the dead skin. Discusses the psychiatric training that she received and recalls one young man who she helped in overcoming depression. Talks about being sent to San Francisco, meeting her husband there, and moving down to San Diego. Talks about her career as an occupational nurse, which was new at the time. Finally discusses her feelings about serving in the Navy and the dropping of the atomic bombs in Japan. Dated December 19, 2002.
