Doerflein examines the role of rituals in uniting and strengthening families. Through an Mormon perspective, Doerflein explores the growing number of rituals embraced and practiced by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, focusing on the ritual surrounding opening the letter containing an Mormon mission call. He examines different customs associated with opening the letter as well as why this ritual has evolved. Created by Chris Doerflein while enrolled in Jill Terry Rudy's English 391 course during fall semester 2006 at Brigham Young University.
