Scope and Contents

Contains correspondence surrounding the activities of the College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University. Correspondence is in the form of memos and letters. Contains correspondence to and from various associate deans including S. Olani Durrant, David M. Ward, and Dee H. Baker. Contains correspondence regarding general administrative issues including funding, budget, grants, research, various proposals, and research. Dates range from 1977 to 1987.

Biographical History

S. Olani Durrant (1936-) was an associate dean and professor in the College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University and academic Vice President of Brigham Young University Hawaii.

Durrant received both his BES and MS degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University, in 1962 and 1963 respectively. He went on to earn his ScD from New Mexico State University in structural mechanics in 1969.

He began instructing at Brigham Young University in 1963 and became a professor of civil engineering in 1970. In 1982 Durrant became the Associate Dean of Engineering and Technology. He was made chairmen of the BYU Civil Engineering Department in 1992. In 1994 Durrant was made the academic Vice President of Brigham Young University Hawaii.

David M. Ward (1937-) was an associate dean and former professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University.

Ward began his work at Brigham Young University in 1964. He received his bachelor's from Stanford in 1959.

Biographical History

Dee H. Barker (1921-2008) was an associate dean in the College of Engineering and Technology and chemical engineering professor Brigham Young Universtity.

Dee H. Barker was born on March 28, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah and died on February 16, 2008 in Provo, Utah. Barker was married to Katheryn Thompson on April 24, 1945. Barker served in World War II aboard the USS Grady. In 1951 he graduated from the University of Utah with a PhD in Chemical Engineering.

In 1959 Dee H. Barker began teaching Chemical Engineering at Brigham Young University after employment with DuPont in Delaware and South Carolina. Barker served for nine years as the head of the Chemical Engineering Department at BYU until he was later appointed to be the associate dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. Barker also served on various boards, institutes and committees including the American Institute of Chemical Engineering, the American Society of Engineering Education, member of the Engineering Accreditation Committee for ABET, the committee for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, the Utah Board of Registration and the Utah Board of Environmental Quality.
