Called to serve (but not to get paid) : comparing Mormon missionary folklore to occupational folklore / by Ryan Peterson, 2005 April 10

 Item — Box: 268, Folder: 3
Identifier: FA 1 Item 2983

Scope and Contents note

Peterson analyzes the folkloric behavior of proselytizing missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and compares contrasts this behavior with behaviors common to occupational folklore. Peterson believes that missionary behavior is similar to occupational folklore insofar as it uses slang, initiatory pranks, and hierarchy to establish order, streamline tasks, express identity and momentarily escape from duties. He finds that missionary folklore surpasses occupational folklore in its even deeper commitment to group unity and purpose. Created by Ryan Peterson when he was enrolled in Eric Eliason's English 391 course in Winter 2005.
