Blake describes a family legend about an animal called the Sidehill Gouger and identifies the components of the story that make it folkloric. He discusses how legends function as forms of social control, as release valves, and as emic ethnography. Created by Les M. Blake when he was enrolled in Eric Eliason's English 392 course during Fall Semester 2001.
