Scope and Contents

Subseries contains letters; photographs; memoirs; responses to the Saints at War questionnaire and the Latter-day Saints in the Military survey; histories, including family histories, personal histories, and military histories; interviews, including transcripts and audiocassettes; articles; autobiographies and biographies; accounts; military records; books; clippings; artifacts, namely a dog tag worn by John Kotch; clippings; a drawing of the USS Pennsylvania; and articles from LDS veterans who served in the United States Navy during the Second World War. A further subseries contains materials from women who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve (Women's Reserve). The materials in this subseries detail mainly the experiences each of these veterans had in the Navy during the Second World War, but some of the materials go into further detail about some of the veterans' pre-war and post-war lives. Dated 1924-2008.

Administrative History

From the Collection:

The Saints at War Project (1999-) works to collect documentation on Mormon veterans from various wars ranging from the Mexican-American War to current conflicts. They are gathered in Brigham Young University's L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

The Saints at War project was started in 1999 by BYU Church History professors Dr. Robert C. Freeman and Dr. Dennis A. Wright to capture the stories of Mormon veterans who have served in various wars to preserve them for future generations. Included in this collection are stories from general authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served in the military including Thomas S. Monson, James E. Faust, and Boyd K. Packer. Using these stories gathered for the collection, this project works to contribute to the Library of Congress's "Veterans History Project" and has used the records gathered in the collection for regular conferences, documentary films like KBYU's "Saints at War," and books including Robert C. Freeman's "Saints at War: Experiences of Latter-day Saints in World War II."
