Scope and Contents note
Materials contain an excerpt of the autobiography (circa 2004) of Ned R. Veater discussing his service as an aviation machinist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Begins by discussing his decision to join the Navy, training, his time on the Marshall Islands. Shares some experiences he had with the natives, recalls the death of President Roosevelt, meeting with his brother in an intersection, and describes the damage he saw in the Philippines. Talks about being bombed by Japanese fighters and quotes information from the book, “Flags of our Fathers” by James Bradley, which recounts the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi. Also talks about the atomic bombs and the reasons why they needed to be used. Explains the importance of the Naval Air Transport Service and its purpose in the Navy, and finally discusses his return to the States. Includes photocopied color photos, and copied documents: flight logs, news clippings, and letters. Also includes copies of his Honorable Discharge certificate and records, and poems. Dated approximately 2004.
