Scope and Contents

Materials contain papers relating to Wells P. McGregor and his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II n on the "U.S.S. Jane Adams". Contains part of a personal history (1981) in which he talks about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the beginning of the war, joining the Marines, and training. Also talks about Guadalcanal, protecting smaller islands in the Pacific, living with Navajo Indians, and the intense fighting in Guam. Describes the invasion of Okinawa and the battle on Sugar Loaf Hill. Recalls his near death experiences during the battle, witnessing the death of several other Marines, and the eventual surrender of the Japanese. Talks about returning home. Urges his loved ones to live righteously. Also includes an eight page first-person article titled "Sugar Loaf," in which he describes his contributions in the battle and the action that he saw there. Also includes a list of the awards he received for his service. Also includes a recent photograph of Wells in uniform. Also contains six pages in which he describes the conditions under which he served, the support he received from family, his spiritual and physical health during his service, and his contact with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other church members. Also includes 31 pages of photocopied photographs of American and Japanese soldiers and battle sights, and two letters from the Secretary of the Navy to the SIXTH Marine Division. Dated 1945-2001.
