Scope and Contents

Contains records relating to the Relief Society, including lessons Beecher helped create for the general Relief Society handbook in 1975. Also includes biographical materials of the organization, copies of records of its organization and proceedings in Nauvoo, Illinois, copies of meeting minutes in Nauvoo, a 1931 handbook, records of various Relief Societies, and publications related to the organization. Also includes records of the church's involvement in women's rights activities of the late 1800s and early 1900s, a project the Church Historical Department staff was asked to complete for the general Relief Society in 1979, circa 1971-1979.

Biographical History

Maureen Ursenbach Beecher (born 1935) was an English professor and research historian in Utah.

Maureen Ursenbach Beecher was born March 19, 1935 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Charles Ursenbach and Lucile Harvey. In 1958 she left to serve in the Swiss-Austrian Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held the positions of editor and senior research associate of the History Division of the Church from 1972 to 1980. From 1981 to 1997, she served as a research historian for the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History as well as an associate professor and professor of English. She retired to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1997.
