Materials contain Richard Junius Pettit's memoir of his World War II experiences in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. Bound memoir contains three main sections: Combat; Internment, Prison, and Escape; and German Occupied France, France, Stateside, arranged chronologically and geographically. Describes his training and missions. Tells of anxieties of initial bombing missions, which had a 10% fatality rate. Discusses hardships, dilemmas and orders to escape from an internment camp at Wauwillermoos. Describes his escape with help of underground through Switzerland and France in winter of 1944-1945. Discusses trip home and family life after war, including psychological difficulties. Account includes photocopies of black and white and color photos and images. Dated August 21, 1993, 2004.
