Scope and Contents

The Tebbs-Burnes portion of the collection consists primarily of letters (including originals and transcriptions) written between Lydia Tebbs Winters and her sisters, Addie (Alice Adelaide) and Nellie (Susan Ellen), their parents, other of their 8 siblings, relatives, and friends. Some of the oldest were written by Lydia's mother's Burnes and Arnold relatives, and by an unknown Tebbs relative of her father, all in the Missouri area. The Tebbs-Burnes letters are arranged chronologically, divided into twelve topical sections.

Biographical History

Morgan Usher Winters (1892-1918) was born in Panguitch, Utah, the only son of Lydia Ellen Tebbs and Morgan Arthur Winters. He was educated at the Normal School of the University of Utah from 1913-1914, then spent a year teaching at a remote school in Victor, Utah. He married Lucretia Vern Seely in January 1915, and endeavored to set himself up as a farmer and rancher, then a store clerk to support the family. The couple had two children, Oliver ARthur (1915) and Margaret Lydia (1917). Usher died in a local flu epidemic in 1918.

Morgan Arthur Winters (1863-1938), son of Hyrum Winters and Elizabeth Williams, was "a solid, deliberate, outdoor man, focused on immediate physical problems" of his life as a farmer and sheepherder, spending most of his time away from his family, while his wife worked long hours in a millinery shop to make ends meet.

Alice Adelaide (Addie) Tebbs Madsen was born in Mona, Juab count, March 12, 1873. Her parents, Daniel F. and Susan Burnes Tebbs, later were among the pioneer settlers of Panguitch, Garfield county. After attending schools there, Mrs. Madsen attended school in Camden Point, MO., and on her return to Utah taught shcool in Parawan. On July 13, 1899 she was married to George G. Madsen, Mt. Pleasant woolgrower, in Panguitch. She was a charter member and past president of the 20th Century Club, a member of the Mt. Pleasant Pioneer Historical Association, and a member of the Daughters of Utah pioneers. For many years she was literary leader in the North Ward Relief Society, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and a Sunday school teacher. She died on November 26, 1949 in Mount Pleasant, Sanpete County, Utah.

Susan Ellen Burnes Tebbs (1845-1921), daughter of Fielding Burnes and Mary Jane Arnold, wife of Daniel Fouchie Tebbs, was "an organized, devoted mother, concerned about the health, well-being, education, and employment of her children and keenly aware of her husband's tendencies to be somewhat scattered, disorganized, and overly optimistic in his view of family finances."

Daniel Fouchie Tebbs, 1830-1900, was a farmer, rancher, teacher, postmaster, musician, and peddler in south central Utah. He married Susan Ellen Burnes in 1863, and the couple had 12 children.

Daniel Fouchie Tebbs (1830-1900), son of William Henry Tebbs and Lydia Kennedy, was born September 2, 1830 in Dumfries, Prince William, Virginia, and died June 29, 1900 in Richfield, Sevier, Utah. He married Susan Ellen Burnes on August 31, 1863 in Platter City, Platte, Missouri.

The couple had 12 children: Daniel Fouchie Tebbs, 1864-1949; Lydia Ellen Tebbs, 1866-1945; William Hazeleph Tebbs, 1868-1936; Mary Elizabeth Tebbs (Mamie), 1870-1890; Alice Adelaide (Addie) Tebbs, 1872-1949; Susan Ellen (Nellie) Tebbs, 1875-1900; Fielding Burnes Tebbs, 1877-1950; Sidney James Tebbs, 1879-1964; Algernon Calvin Tebbs, 1881-1956; Harry Clement Tebbs, 1883-1955; Dudley Duncan (Dee) Tebbs, 1885- 1966; and Henry Lazelle Tebbs, 1887-1888. Tebbs was a farmer, rancher, teacher, postmaster, musician, and peddler of food items and a wagon hardware accessory (the jack or "climber") throughout south central Utah. He had a genuine affection for his wife and children, and a great knowledge of and commitment to his LDS faith.

Lydia Ellen Tebbs (1866-1945) is the eldest daughter of Daniel Fouchie Tebbs and Susan Ellen Burnes. She was born in Cedar Fort, Utah; grew up in Mona, Tebbsdale, and Panguitch, Utah. She attended school for a time in Beaver, Utah, then taught school for a number of years. She married sheepherder and a farmer Morgan Arthur Winters in the late 1880s; they had only one son, Morgan Usher Winters (1892-1918). Lydia spent much of her married life living alon and working in a millinery business while her husband Morgan was out in the desert tending their sheep. Morgan and Lydia went to the temple to be sealed to each other in 1919.

Fielding Burnes (Burnes) Tebbs was born January 26, 1877 in Spry, Utah, the third son of Daniel Fouchie Tebbs and Susan Ellen Burnes. He married Ruth Asay on October 28, 1901, in Panguitch, Utah. The couple had six children, including Fielding Burnes Tebbs (1902-1908) and Cecil Tebbs Adams (1904-1960). He died May 25, 1950, in Panguitch, Utah.

Algernon Calvin (Cal) Tebbs, son of Daniel Fouchie Tebbs and Susan Ellen Burnes, was born February 07, 1881 in Tebbsdale, Utah. He married Mary Elizabeth Myers and had 8 children: Mary Ellen (Mamie), Lydia, Irene, James Calvin, Blaine Myers, Clement "J", Camilla, and Cleo. He died April 07, 1956 in Panguitch, Utah.

Harry Clement (Clem) Tebbs was born in Tebbsville, Utah, on 23 October 1883 to Daniel Tebbs and Susan Ellen Burnes. Harry married Ida Dott Fullmer and had a child. He passed away on 6 December 1955.

Dudley Duncan (D.D.) Tebbs was born 30 November 1885 in Tebbsdale, Utah. He attended dental school starting in 1908 (graduation date unknown). He died 31 May 1966 in St. George, Utah.

Lucretia Vern Seely was born on January 2, 1895, the seventh child of John Henry Seely and Margaretta Folkman Peel of Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She married Morgan Usher Winters and had 2 children, Oliver Arthur and Margaret Lydia. She passed away on March 17, 1933 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah.
