Existence and Location of Originals

Princeton University Library. In the Princeton copy is the note: "cuyo original se encuentra en el Archivo Episcopal de S. Cristobal Las Casas."

Original transcript commissioned by Francisco de Orozco y Jiménez, bishop of Chiapas, of an ancient manuscript. Pencil notes by Gates state that Orozco y Jiménez attempted to gather all available manuscripts in Chiapas into the episcopal library, and this was subsequently used as a stable for the Carranza-Alvarado troops, with "horses eating up the manuscripts." One of Gates' agents, Mr. Smith, was given permission to remove manuscripts from the archive although nothing of importance was found.
