Note on verso: "461. Red Mohammedans of China. These four students at the Communist Party 'National Minorities School,' Yenan, North Shensi, are from Kansu and Kokonor. The two tall figures on the left were previously officers in Ma Hung-ping's Moslem army. They were captured by the Chinese Reds in March, 1936, with 3,000 other Moslems, of whom 100 chose to join the Red Army. Of Arabian origin, they have light brown eyes-- and they still beleive in the religion of Islam. Photo by Nym Wales, Yenan, 1937."
