Note on verso: "99. 'Redbeard'. The unshaven gentleman in the rear is not a Russian advisor (of whom, contrary to propaganda reports, there are none at all with the Chinese Red Army), but none other than your photographer (Edgar Snow, who brought the first pictures of Red China out to the world that have ever been made available to the press). This picture was taken while travelling in Ninghsia far from tonsorial/factilities. The resultant beard which turned out to be red earned from his the nickname 'hung hu-tze', or 'Redbeard.' The warriors with him are part of the headquarters company of the 1st Division, First Army Corps, First Front Red Army."
