Jack and Jill manuscript fragment, 1880

 Item — Box: 1, Folder: 34
Identifier: Vault MSS 503 Series 1 Sub-Series 2 Item 5

Scope and Contents

Contains one leaf of ink holograph manuscript, unsigned, from the text of Alcott's novel Jack and Jill. Two pages, quarto, on ruled paper. Numbered "7" at upper right, it is from chapter 1, "The Catastrophe." It contains four corrections in the author's hand which were incorporated into the published version. There are, however, a number of minor differences between this manuscript and published version and the major omission of an entire sentence --"Jill, of course, was not her real name, but had been given because of her friendship with Jack, who so admired Janey Pecq's spirit and fun."-- from the manuscript. The omission is marked by an asterisk and the word "Over," in the author's hand. The absence of any wording on the verso and a pin hole in the upper left of the page strongly suggests that the added sentence was written on an additional sheet that was attached to this leaf at one time.
