General

Note on verso: "118, 91 and 96. Red Cavalry in Yu Wang Pao, Ninghsia, Inner Mongolia, during an advance against Mohammedan troops. All the Reds' horses are captured--they get their best ponies, such as these shown here, from the Mohammedans. The crack 5th Cavalry Division shown here is the terror of the enemy, as they are the only cavalry in China trained to charge mounted with sabres-- trained by the only 'foreign advisor' in the Red Army, a German cavalry expert. These are part of the First Front Red Army commanded by Peng Dehuai, once a Kuomintang general, and this division numbers 2,000 fast ponies. All other Chinese and also Mohammedan cavalrymen dismount in actual battle and rely upon rifles. This Red cavalry is regarded generally as the finest in China because of its special training and general fighting morale; the reds have literally demolished the cavalry of their hard-riding enemies in the Northwest, Mohammedans under Ma Hung-kuei etc. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
