In an envelope addressed to Gen. L. Thomas (included): Autograph letter signed, from Thomas L. Kane, Kingsessing, Philadelphia, to Thomas, he is resigning so he can recover without being supported by the government, plans to return when he is strong enough, 1 p., folded, written on 3 sides, 8 August 1863; copy of same letter, 1 p.; Autograph letter signed, from Thomas L. Kane to Thomas, draft, on his wounds received during the war, mentions his “little book of Instructions for Skirmishers,” the first volume of his “socalled Tactics,” Gen. McClellan ordered him to drill 4 companies of Bucktails in his system, 2 pp., folded, 1 written on 4 sides, 1 on 2 sides, 8 August 1863; L, from S. Weir Mitchell to Thomas L. Kane, copied by Thomas, Thomas’ decision to resign is a “wise” and “almost imperative” one, 1 p., 8 August 1863.
