Note on verso: "54. Tough guys of the Red Army in Kansu: Left, Yang Chih-chang, head of the Supply Department, Red Army in Kansu, was born in Kweichow, graduated from native schools, joined a Szechuan militarist's army, in 1925 entered Whampoa Academy at Canton, under Chiang Kai-shek and Borodin, in 1927, as an officer in Yeh Ting's 20th Army, revolted against Chiang Kai-shek, has ever since beeen with the Reds; right, Sha T'ing, an intellectual and also a young Red Army commander, returned student from France, now in command of border defense near Holienwan, Kansu. Note slogans on the walls of Yang's headquarters in the rear. They still cry out the demands of the revolution and anti-Japanism."
