Scope and Contents
Materials include a journal kept by Elizabeth Wood Kane, which contains an account of her daily activities, her home responsibilities, her education, and her desires to become a better housekeeper. It has information about her relationship with her husband, Thomas L. Kane, and her family both immediate and extended. Her husband wants her to pay a housekeeper so Elizabeth can focus more on her intellectual pursuits. Includes thoughts about her photography, journal writing, and work as a physician. There is a cipher from Brigham Young that Elizabeth decoded. The journal mentions her husband's travels to Utah and Washington, D.C., her worries about her husband's lack of religion, and contains copies of various letters she received while keeping the journal. Dated 1858 to 1860.
