Elizabeth Wood Kane journal, 1854-1857
Scope and Contents
Materials include a journal written by Kane containing an 1855 calendar with days marked off and numbered, possibly counting down her pregnancy with her first child, Harriet. There are also accounts of her pregnancy with Harriet and records of her daughter's weight growth. There is also an account of when she was a student at the Female Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and comments about her desire to strengthen her body and have another baby. Also includes some sketches, accounts of visits from Mormon missionaries (including John Taylor), some prayers and poems, newspaper clippings, entries related to visits to Utah and Northwestern Pennsylvania, and an account of the birth of her second child, a son, Elisha Kent Kane. Journal entries date between January 1, 1854 to June 7, 1857, with breaks between July 21, 1854 to December 31, 1854 and December 18, 1856 to March 21, 1857. Dated 1854-1857.
