Scope and Contents

Materials include a typescript copy of the original manuscript titled "Founding of Kane and Our Family Life There, Volume I" and written by Elizabeth Wood Kane. The history begins in the summer of 1864, when the family left Philadelphia to settle in McKean County. Kane gives a detailed account of her family's life through June 20, 1865. She writes about the burning of their lumber mill, boarding in Marvin Valley, moving in to their barn waiting for their home to be finished, building the mill, Thomas L. Kane's desire to move to the Pacific Northwest, other settlers, her illness, and their family's business ventures. Dated 1870.
