Note on verso: "60. Killed in action was Wang Liang, 24-year old revolutionary on the right. Commander of the Fourth Red Army in Kiangsi, he was killed in action during Chiang Kai-shek's Fifth campaign in Kiangsi, 1934, during which 25% of the Red officers suffered casualities in the bloody struggle. Seated in the center is Nieh Ho-t'ing (now only 28 years old), Chief of Staff of the First Front Red Army, fighting in Kansu and Ninghsia, in China's northwest. On the left is Chen Kuang, age 25, Commander of First Front Army's Second Division, likewise now in the Northwest. These three wre buddies in Kiangsi where they worked together as officers in the Fourth Army at the time this old picture was taken. Reproduction of Soviet photogrpah by Edgar Snow."
