Note on verso: "31. Chou En-lai, vice-chairman of the Red Army military committee. This unkempt beard hides a youth intellectual face, for Zhou is only 37. Formerly Chiang Kai-shek's 'political advisor' in the days of Whampoa Academy in Canton, Zhou is today commander of the Red Army on the Eastern Front--facing Yen Hsi-Shan's Shansi 'Model Academy.' Educated at Nankai University (Tientsin American supported school), and later at Lyon in France, then in England, and later at Lyon in France, then in England, and afterward in Germany and Russia, Chou speaks faultless French, good English and German, and knows a smattering of Russian. In 1927 he organized 800,000 workers in Shanghai when he was 27 years old, and staged an uprising, capturing that city ith his Worker's Army for the Nationalist Forces. A few months later he had joined the Communists and turned against Chiang Kai-shek and the Right. Today Chiang thinks his heard is worth $80,000. Do you wantto collect? Try your luck at Pei Chia P'ing, North Shensi, Commander Zhou's headquarters, where this photo was taken by Edgar Snow, 1936."
