Biographical History

From the Collection:

A. Sherman Christensen (1905-1996) was a Mormon district judge in Utah.

Albert Sherman Christensen was born on June 9, 1905 in Manti, Utah to Albert H. Christensen and Jennie Snow. He grew up in Provo, Utah, where he attended Brigham Young University between 1923 and 1927. Christensen married Louis Bowen on April 4, 1927, and they had three children. The couple moved east shortly after their marriage, where Christensen attended the National University School of Law. During this time he also worked as a business specialist at the United States Department of Commerce.

After graduation in 1931, Christensen returned to Provo to practice law. During World War II he served in the United States Naval Reserve, reaching the rank of lieutenant commander, and returned to civilian life and his practice in 1945. He was appointed a district judge for the 10th Circuit in Salt Lake City in 1954, the first Mormon to hold such a post. After a distinguished judicial career, Christensen retired in 1996. He died on August 13, 1996 in Provo, Utah.
