General

Note on verso: "504. YOUNG VANGUARDS of the Chinese Soviets at an Athletic Meet held August 1, 1937, on the anniversary of the founding of the Red Army. They were neatly dressed, heads shaven, with modernistic insignia of the Young Vanguard detachment on their red shirts. Most of these are local school-children of Yen-an, and are organized under the Communist Youth league. Note the Kuomintang flag and the Hammer-and-Sickle Red flag crossed together in the rear of the picture, symbolizing the cooperation with the Central Government. Photo by Nym Wales, 1937."
