Note on verso: "98 and 115. No. 98 is the Black Horse battalion of the Red Army and No. 115 is the white horse battalion both taken during maneuvers in Ninghsia. Both these units were equippped with horse captured from Nankings's First Cavalry Army in Kansu. The First Cavalry Army recently joined the Anti-Japanese United Front, led from Sianfu, ans is now commanded by Ma Chan-shan, the famous hero of Nonni River battle in Manchuria, when Japanese troops met their first serious opposition in the conquest of that country. Thus the Red Army and the First Cavalry army are now reconciled in the Northwest and preparing to attack the Japanese at some undetermined date on the basis of their 'United Front' agreement.
