Note on verso: "79, 80 and 90. No brass hats but grass hats for camouflage against air bombing are worn by these Red troops as they assemble for a mass meeting on the plains of far Ninghsia. In the background part of the 2nd Division of the First Red Army Corps, assembled to hear a political lecture on the Red Army's 'People's anti-Japanese United Front,' program, and to see a play by their own theatre illustrating the high points of the lecture in the open-aire enclosure serving as a stage. In the foreground, Mohammedan peasant sympathizers 'listen-in'. For mass meetings called by day Red soldiers wear these broad grass hats and short cloaks covering their backs made of green grass. Even the guns are camouflaged should one of Chiang Kai-shek's 600 airplanes pay a visit to Red lines while such meetings are being held.
