Note on verso: "85. Here's mud in their eyes: Red trench-mortar company actually bombing a mud-walled Mohammedan citadel held by Ma Hungkuei's Kuomintang troops, near Li Wang Pao, Ninghsia province. Trench mortars were supplied by Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang, vice bandit-suppression commissioner, from whom the Reds recently captured large supplies of arms, munitions and men. Photograph by Edgar Snow."
