General

Note on verso: "106. Red 'fighters' in Ninghsia. Communist armies do not use the word 'ping' or 'soldier', to which much odium attaches in China, but all their troops 'chan-shih'--'fighters', or 'warriors.' Likewise there are no 'generals' in the Red Army, but only the title 'commander'--every oficer from squad loader up being designated by this simple title. No insignia is worn by Red officers, who dress, eat and live exactly as do their men. Neither officers nor men get any salary, so they can rightly claim to be the only non-mercenary army in China. Here 5,000 Red 'fighters,' (the average of the age in the ranks is 19, and of the offcers 23 years) are assembled in mass meeting to hear P'eng Teh-huai, Commander of the First Front Red Army give his weekly lecture on the political situation in China and describe the immediate tasks before the Army. At Yu Wang Pao, Ninghsia. Photo by Edgar Snow, 1936."
