Note on verso: "122. Red Citadel in Ninghsia Province. 'Tao Chi Shi-yeh' or the Trading Post of Messers. Tao and Chu, read the letters carved above this former fortification of Ma Hung-kuei, Kuomintang General in the Northwest, ousted by the Reds. It has now become a strong Red outpost near the Mongolian frontier. Standing in the archway are several of the most brilliant young commanders of the First Front Red Army: Left to right are: Teng Hua, Chairman of the Political Department, 2d Div. 1st Army Corps, graduate of the Red Academy in Kiangsi; next is Nieh Jung-chen, political commissar of the First Army Corps, next is Tso Chuan, acting Commander of the First Army Corps; the fourth figure is unknown; fifth is Cheng Ken, handsome and famous commander of the undefeated 1st Division of the First Army Corps; next is Nieh Ho-t'ing, 28-year-old Chief of Staff of the First Front Army, participant in the 1927 Nanchang Uprising which began the Red revolution in China; last figure unknown to the photographer."
