Magnum b-42 note: "Wen T'ao, the short one, director of the dramatics troupe (the only Bohemian in Yenan which was very puritanical) with one of my interpreters named Ch'en from Kiangsi. Ch'en was a college student just arrived and having a bad time with colds, stomach trouble and all. He pronounced Hunan as "funan) and had trouble interviewing anybody but Kiangsi people, of whom there were few in Yenan except Mao. (With Mao my interpreter was Wu Liang-p'ing.) I am grateful to Ch'en for helping me so much. He took me across the river one day and on the way back a sudden storm caused it to rise to be dangerous; he had never been on a horse before and was terrified (so was I.) We were helped across by the big bodyguard in my compound, and it was very dangerous. The water was thick mud; you would suffocate in no time if drowning."
