Note on verso: "79, 80, and 90. Not brass hats but grass hats for camouflage against air bombing are worn by these Red troops as they assemble for a mass meeting on the plains of far Ninghsia. In the background, part of the 2nd Division of the First Red Army Corps, assemble to hear a polticial lecture on the Red Army's 'People's anti-Japanese United Front," program, and to see a play by their own theatre illustrating the high points of the lecture--in the open-air enclosure serving as a stage. In the foreground, Mohammedan peasant sympathiers 'listen-in.' For mass meetings called by day Red soldiers wera these broad grass hats and short cloaks covering their backs, made of green grass. Even the guns are camouglaged should one of Chiang Kai-shek's 600 airplanes pay a visit to Red to Red lines while such meetings are being held. No. 80 shows the camouflage their hats, and No. 90 is a closeup of the headgear, showing the circlet around which the grass is woven. Photos by Edgar Snow, 1936."
