Note on verso: "102, 95, and 119. Mass meeting of Red Army in Ninghsia, Inner Mongolia, at sundown, gathered to hear their weekly lecutre on the political situation in China by P'eng Teh-huai, Commander of the First Front Army. The Chinese Communist armies do not use the word 'ping' or soldier, to which much odium attaches in China, but call their men 'chan shih' meaning 'fighters' or 'warriors'. Likewise thereare no 'generals' in the Red Army, but only the title 'commander' is used--every officer from squad leader up being designated by this simple title. Neither officers nor men get any salary. The average age of the men is only 19 and of the officers 23 years--an incredible army of youth. In this picture 5,000 'Red fighters' are assembled with their grass hats at the feet as camoflage, hastily put on whenever the drone of enemy bombing planes is heard. The sprinkling of light 'spots' on their caps is the Red Star worn by every soldier. The white 'panama' hate worn by the two men in the front are the property of two Mohammedan peasants gathered round to listen-in. About 200 Mohammedans were present at this meeting and the reds have had great success in winning the sympathies of these people in the Northwest. Photos by Edgar Snow, 1936."
