Note on verso: "459. Hu Lin-Kuei (at right) commander of Dramatics Propaganda Tour, with five of its members. In the middle is the child-comedian of the Dramatics Society, an accomplished mimic. This tour left Yen-an June 24 and returned August 9, after touring the North Shensi Soviet areas doing anti-Japanese and "democratic" propaganda preparation for changing to the democratic system. there were 38 actors, of whom 19 were children. The song the peasants liked most was the round sung to the tune "Row, Row, Row your Boat." These children walked all the time up mountains and across rivers-- a very heroic undertaking-- and 7 of them were girls, like the two in this picture at the right and middle at the back. Hu Lin-kuei is from Szechuan where he was a Communist Youth worker. This picture was taken August 11 just after the tour returned to Yan'an, by Nym Wales, 1937."
