Scope and Contents

Contains the e-mails written to and the responses from the Brigham Young University President's Page. Started in 2000, the President's Page was an opportunity for students, community members, and alumni to have more direct contact with the President of Brigham Young University. The materials include e-mails from Presidents Merrill J. Bateman (President from 1996-2003) and Cecil O. Samuelson (President from 2003-).

The e-mails include a wide range of subjects including thank you notes, complaints or compliments of Brigham Young University sports teams, particularly football, professors, campus policies and soliciting information about the University. Of notable interest are e-mails concerning public commentary about : discontinuing of wrestling and men's gymanstics programs in 2000, Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic games preparation 2001-2002, football program Honor Code violations 2004, professor Steven E. Jones 9/11 conspiracy theory and reaction 2005-2006, and professor Jeffery Nielsen's comments about gay marriage by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints First Presidency and subsequent dismissal in 2006.

The majority of the materials are in English. Select pieces of correspondence are in Spanish or Portuguese and the majority of these have a translation available.

Restricted. Closed for 70 years from the end date of the administration, and thereafter open to the public in accordance with the University Archives Policy.

Collected by L. Lee Bartlett while serving as Assistant to the President to both President Merrill J. Bateman and President Cecil O. Samuelson. He donated the materials on March 20, 2012 to the University Archives of the L. Tom Perry Special Collection, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University, Provo Utah.
