Biographical / Historical

The Ancient Studies Institute, or Institute of Ancient Studies, was established in 1973 by the Brigham Young University Board of Trustees. The institute was seen as the research arm of the University for the purpose of writing and disseminating information about documents relevant to the study of ancient scholarship, including the Classical languages of Greek and Latin and their respective literature, Ancient History and Ancient Religion. Hugh Nibley was the institute director from its founding until the unit merged into the Religious Studies Center in 1977.
