Administrative History

Department of Family Sciences (1982-1999) was an instructional unit of Brigham Young University.

Department of Family Sciences was created as a reorganization of Department of Child Development and Family Relationships in 1982. Operating as part of the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, the school is responsible for undergraduate and graduate future occupational instruction in the areas involving working with children, individuals, and families in meeting their developmental, behavioral, relationship, financial, and consumption needs. The Department Chairs were Kay P. Edwards (1982-1984), Robert F. Stahmann (1984-1990), Terrance D. Olson (1990-1996), and James M. Harper (1996-1999). The Department of Family Sciences was reorganized in 1999 and became the School of Family Life.

The School of Family Life (est. 1999) is an instructional unit at Brigham Young University.

The School of Family Life was created in a reorganization of the earlier Department of Family Sciences in 1999. Operating as part of the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, the school is responsible for undergraduate and graduate instruction in the areas of Home and Family/Home Economics, Home Economics Education, Marriage, Family, and Human Development with the emphases of Family or Human Development. Directors have included James M. Harper (1999-2007), Richard B. Miller (2007-2012), and Dean M. Busby (2012- ).
