Administrative History

The Academic Council (1886-1891) was an administrative body at Brigham Young Academy.

The Academic Council, composed on the Academy principal and two councilors, was established under Karl G. Maeser in 1886. The body had responsibility for faculty hiring, student discipline, and other matters. This organizational structure was dissolved following the departure of Maeser in 1891. Members of the Council included Maeser (1886-1891), James E. Talmage (1886-1887), Benjamin Cluff (1886-1887), Joseph B. Keeler (1887-1891), and Nels L. Nelson (1887-1891).
