Biographical History

Joseph Kelly Nicholes was born October 10, 1887 in American Fork, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young University High School in 1908 before serving a mission to Denmark. He married Olive Maiben June 5, 1912. He obtained a bachelors degree in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics from Brigham Young University in 1916. Nicholes served as president of Dixie Normal College from 1919 to 1923 and 1926 to 1933. He returned to BYU in 1933 to teach chemistry and served as chairman of the Chemistry Department from 1945 to 1955. He died on October 4, 1964 in Provo, Utah.
