Scope and Contents

An oral history interview with Earl J. Glade Jr., conducted by Alma Heaton for the BYU Alumni Association Emeritus Club on November 15, 1984. Earl discusses his early family life as well as his father's career, his own studies at Brigham Young University followed by fourteen years working for KSL Radio and for a station in Boise, Idaho. He relates how he brought forty years of broadcasting experience to BYU in 1966 when he became director of Broadcasting Affairs on the campus, as well as a teacher. He ends the interview with his discussion of retirement and grandchildren and advice to future broadcasters.

Biographical History

Earl J. Glade Jr. (1911-2001) was a broadcaster and executive in Utah and Idaho.

Earl Joseph Glade Jr. was born on July 17, 1911 in Provo, Utah to Earl Joseph Glade and Sarah Elizabeth Rasband. Raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was baptised in 1919. He attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating in 1933. The following year he married Alyce Love Beardshall.

Glade began his career in broadcasting at KLO Radio in Ogden, Utah in 1926. After college he worked at KSL Radio from 1933 to 1947, then at KBOI in Boise, Idaho. In 1966 he came to Brigham Young University, where he led the Broadcast Services department until his retirement in 1976. Glade also served as executive director of the Utah Broadcasters Association from 1975 to 1988.

Glade passed away on May 14, 2001 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
