Administrative History

The Department of Education was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University.

The Department of Education was formed in 1970 in a merger of the Department of Teacher Education and the Graduate Department of Education of the College of Education. The department prepared teachers in the areas of elementary, secondary, and special education. It was administered by Curtis Van Alfen as department chair, under the direction of the college dean. In 1972 the unit was again split to form the departments of Educational Administration, Educational Psychology, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education and Foundations.

The Graduate Department of Education was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University.

The Graduate Department of Education was established in the College of Education in 1962, resulting from a merger of the departments of Educational Administration, Educational Philosophy and Programs, and Educational Research and Services. The unit was responsible for instruction in school administration, supervision, curriculum development, educational psychology, and associated fields. It offered graduate degrees at the master's and doctorate levels. Department chairmen included Keith R. Oakes (1962-1964), Robert L. Egbert (1964-1966), and Curtis Van Alfen (1968-1970). In 1970 the unit merged with the Department of Teacher Education to form the Department of Education.

Administrative History

The Department of Educational Administration was an instructional unit at Brigham Young University.

The Department of Educational Administration was established in 1922 in the newly formed College of Education. It offered courses in elementary, secondary, and rural school administration, including finance, personnel management, supervision, and research techniques. In 1925 the department absorbed portions of the Department of Vocational Education, and in 1955 parts of the Department of Education. Department chairs included Hugh M. Woodward (1922-1923), L. John Nuttall (1924-1928), Joseph Sudweeks (1929-1930), Asael C. Lambert (1931-1947), Reuben D. Law (1948-1954), Owen L. Barnett (1955), Percy E Burrup (1956-1957), and Keith R. Oaks (1958-1962). The unit later merged with departments of Educational Administration, Educational Philosophy and Programs, and Educational Research and Services to form Graduate Department of Education in 1962.
