Administrative History

The department was administered by a department chair under the direction of the college dean. The department was associated with the College of Family Living (1966-1981) and the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences (1981-1982). This series was created when the department chairmen were Duane M. Laws and Joel Moss.

The purpose of the department is to emphasize two areas of knowledge: child development and family relations. In the child development area, the basic developmental and behavioral characteristics of the child are studied from conception to adulthood. In the family relations area, students gain knowledge and insight concerning dating, courtship, marriage, and family behavior throughout the family life cycle. Courses are also selected from other departments in order to enrich and broaden the student's understanding of human development.
