Administrative History

From the Collection:

The Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University was established in 1972. Prior to that time linguistics courses were taught by the Department of Languages. The department was reorganized as the Department of Linguistics and Special Languages in 1978. In 1982, the department was reorganized as the Department of Linguistics. The department was reorganized as the Department of Linguistics and ESL in 1983. The department was reorganized and returned to its previous designation of Department of Linguistics in 1989. The department then was reorganized as the Department of Linguistics and English Language in 2002 as part of a reorganization of the College of Humanities. The department is responsible for teaching linguistics, English language, editing, English as a Second Language, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and American Sign Language. The department also assists in managing the English Language Center program.
