Administrative History

The Department of Theatre and Film (1988-1997) was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

The Department of Theatre and Film was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications beginning in 1988. Previously, the department was known as the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema. In 1997 the name of the department was changed to Theatre and Media Arts. The Department Chairs were: Harold R. Oaks (1988-1994) and Eric Fielding (1994-1997).

The function of the department was to foster disciplined scholars and artist, committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, who so excel in their personal conduct and professional skill that they are sought as models of leadership, inspiration and achievement. Also to provide comprehensive programs designed to produce graduates and products that delight, edify, and enlarge the human spirit. The Department of Theatre and Film was directly managed by a Department Chair who was under the direction of the College Dean.

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts has been a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications since 1997. It was previously known as the Department of Visual Arts. The Department of Theatre and Media Arts is directly managed by a Department Chair who acts under the direction of the College Dean. The Department Chairs are: Eric Fielding (1997-1998), Robert A. Nelson (1998-2005), Rodger D. Sorensen (2005-present).
