Administrative History

From the Collection:

The bulk of material was created under the leadership of Spencer Palmer.

The department of Asian Studies in the College of Social Sciences was organized in the fall of 1962 under Paul Hyer. Its purpose was to give students a foundation for careers and advanced work in the Far East. In 1968 Spencer Palmer became department head; he was a Professor of Religion and History specializing in Korean Studies and Christianity in Asia. For the next seven years Palmer served as head until being replaced in 1975 by Russell Horiuchi, professor of Geography at BYU.
