The Department of Business Management (1956-1981) was a department within the College of Business at Brigham Young University.

In 1958 the Brigham Young University College of Commerce combined the departments of Marketing, Industrial Management, and Finance and Banking, into the Department of Business Management. The department allowed students the choice of emphasis in finance and banking, industrial management, and marketing. During its years of operation the following served as department chairmen: Clinton L. Oaks (1958-1960), Parley M. Pratt (1961-1963), Sterling D. Sessions (1964-1965), L. Brent Eagar (1966-1969), Ivan T. Call (1970-1979), H. Keith Hunt (1979-1981). In 1981-1982 the Institute of Business Management was established and became a part of the Marriott School of Business until 1997 when the name was changed back to the Department of Business Management.

The Department of Business Management was responsible for the teaching of courses on the class of managerial accounting and control, personal finance, principles of salesmanship, industrial organization and management, commercial law, principles of marketing, financial administration, industrial purchasing, human relations in administration, general insurance, investments, corporation finance, real estate and urban land economics, advertising, retailing, wholesaling and industrial marketing, marketing research, problems in production- manufacturing processes, problems in production- manpower management, production control, personnel management, industrial quality control, management of production facilities, advanced production methods, industrial planning and forecasting, problems in marketing, executive lectures, industry analysis, problems in retail store management, problems in sales management, advanced problems in marketing research, life insurance, property and casualty insurance, real estate administration, management of financial institutions, investment management, modern corporate problems, problems in business management and the thesis for master's degree program.

The Marriott School of Management (est. 1989) is an administrative unit at Brigham Young University. It is responsible for instructional departments associated with business and management studies.

The Marriott School of Management, previously the School of Management, was established as the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott School of Management in 1989. In 1998, the name was shortened to the Marriott School of Management. The school has been administered by the following deans: Paul H. Thompson, K. Fred Skousen, Ned C. Hill, Gary Cornia, and Lee T. Perry.

The Marriott School of Management was established because of a need for strong leadership in business, government, and church service as well as to provide opportunities for Marriott School of Management graduates to contribute to society in meaningful ways. For this purpose, programs within the school are designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge, insight, maturity, competence, and a strong sense of moral and ethical behavior.

Since 1989, the Marriott School of Management has been the administering body for the following academic departments: School of Accountancy, Institute of Business Management, Information Management, Managerial Economics, Institute of Public Management, Organizational Behavior, Aerospace Studies (Air Force ROTC), Military Science (Army ROTC), School of Accountancy and Information Systems, Management Communications, Business Management, Organizational Leadership and Strategy, Finance, and the Romney Institute of Public Management. The Marriott School of Management is administered by a dean under the direction of the president of the university.
