Scope and Contents

This file contains email correspondence addressed to BYU Vice President John S. Tanner prior to and during his tenure as Vice President at the university. This includes emails from English students who attended his classes prior to his promotion to BYU Vice President in 2007, correspondence pertaining to Sen. Harry Reid's visit to BYU's American Heritage class in 2007, travel documentation, preparations for weekly Devotional/Fourm addresses, emails pertaining to the closure of the Social Work program at BYU (including griveances from parents and students concerning the decision), an increase of ASL Professors for night courses, and the creation of the BYU flagship campus in China. Dates range from September 2002 - December 5, 2007

Biographical History

From the Sub-Series:

John S. Tanner (1950- ) is a English professor and university administrator in Utah.

John Sears Tanner was born in 1950 and raised in Southern California. He studied English at Brigham Young University (BYU), and received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1980. He taught at Florida State University and BYU. He later served in the BYU administration, and was Academic Vice President between 2004 and 2011.

In 2011 Tanner left the university to serve as a mission president in São Paulo, Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his return in 2014 he was called as the first counselor in the Sunday School General Presidency of the Church.

On May 12, 2015, Tanner was announced as the president of Brigham Young University--Hawaii.
