Administrative History

From the Collection:

International Programs (1986-1993) was an administrative unit at Brigham Young University. The office was responsible for managing the university's study abroad and international internships programs. Prior to its establishment, Study Abroad was operated by the Division of Continuing Education. The office was later split in 1993 within the Kennedy Center. Directors included Ted J. Warner (1986-1992) and Rodney B. Boynton (1992-1993).

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages (1982-1972) was a subunit of the College of Humanities.

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages was established in 1968 after the dissolution of the Department of Languages. R. Max Rogers served as the department chair 1968 to 1970 and Arthur R. Watkins served as the department chair from 1970 to 1972. In 1972 the department was split to form the departments of Germanic Languages and Asian and Slavic Languages. In 1982, this department was reinstated under the Associate Dean Garold Neil Davis. The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages offered the Bachelor of Arts degree in German and Russian. The Master of Arts degree and the Doctor of Philosophy degree are offered in German. Other language courses offered by the department included Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish.

The Department of Germanic Languages (1972-1982) was a department in Brigham Young University's College of Humanities.

The Department of Germanic Languages was established after the reorganization of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. The languages taught in the department were Danish, Dutch, German, Norwegian, and Swedish. By 1979, Finnish, Icelandic, and Afrikaans were added. Department chairmen included Arthur R. Watkins (1972-1975), Garold N. Davis (1975-1978), and Hans-Wilhelm Kelling (1978-1982).
